29-05-2014: Joburg assist displaced occupants of the Moth building

On Saturday, 24 May 2014, a fire broke out at the third floor of the Moth building situated at De Villiers Street, Johannesburg. The City's Emergency Management Services responded to the emergency and extinguished the fire, as well as provided food and other relief to those affected by the fire.
The Gauteng Province and the City have since been engaging with the occupiers in an attempt to seek an appropriate response to their request for emergency shelter, in light of the available resources and the prevailing circumstances.

The City has agreed to provide temporary emergency accommodation to the occupiers, who require assistance, at its Linatex facility in Doornfontein, Johannesburg. The City aims to commence the relocation process today and will also assist the occupiers in that regard.

The Linatex facility is managed by a third party service-provider, Metropolitan Evangelical Services.

The City has requested the service-provider to make the necessary logistical arrangements to assist the displaced with accommodation at the Linatex building in line with the house rules of the facility.
