30-10-2014: Randburg fire station gets a major makeover
The new look Randburg Fire Station which has been refurbished to the tune of R5 million will be formally handed over to the City’s Emergency Services on Friday 31 October 2014.
The Executive Mayor, members of the mayoral committee, CEOs of JPC and Multichoice will be attending the event. The new world class fire station has a Basic Emergency Safety and Fire Education Centre (BESAFE) that will serve as an educational tool used by The Public Education, Information and Relations (PIER) team to inform community members about EMS safety programmes. It also has a fire safety unit which deals with code and bylaw enforcement to assist communities with compliance of city emergency services bylaws.
The old single story building was built in 1965 and is situated at the Corners of Barkston Road and Mackay Lane Road (Opposite Multichoice in Randburg) has been refurbished to meet international fire service standards with the following additions:
1.Vehicle wash bay (used to wash ambulance and fire engines)
2.Gymnasium
3.Recreational centre with snooker/soccer tables and Dstv
4.Two boardrooms
5.12 offices
6.Bathrooms and Showers
The following services will also be rendered at the station:
1.The Chaplaincy Office which deals with trauma counselling and spiritual guidance to staff and members of the community when there is a disaster or unusual incident
2.The Fire Safety Office which will have four fire safety inspectors responsible for bylaw enforcement and code enforcement of the City’s emergency services bylaws.
3. The Public Education Office which will have a Pier and Community Officer who will be responsible for educating community members about life and fire safety in order to proactively reduce the number of incidents within communities.
School children can also visit the public education site or Besafe centre to be trained on Learn not to burn Program which is designed specifically for young children to know the emergency number, how to evacuate a burning building and first aid amongst other things.
“As part of our planning and commitment to create a safer City and respond to emergencies we need to have fire stations with highly skilled personnel as well as state of the art equipment”, says councilor Sello Lemao, member of the mayoral committee for Public Safety.
