02/06/2015: Conference looks at environmental health issues
The City of Johannesburg’s Environmental Health Conference will be held on 04-05 June 2015 at Turffontein Racecourse in Johannesburg.
The conference will focus on topics such as food safety regulations, global warming and its impact on health, water pollution, informal food traders and vector control, and rodents’ control among others issues. The conference aims to advance environmental health services in the City of Johannesburg.
It is at this two-day conference, where environmental health practitioners nominated for the Alfred Nzo Achievement Awards will make presentations on the research that has been done around the city.
The Environmental Health Conference will culminate into the Environmental Health Awards to be presented to deserving environmental health practitioners (EHPs). Environmental health practitioners, academics, councillors, representatives from neighbour municipalities and health department management are expected to attend this conference.
The City of Joburg's environmental health directorate introduced the Alfred Nzo Achievement Award in 2002, in memory of the late activist and politician, Alfred Nzo, who worked as Environmental Health Inspector in Alexandra.
"The award is given to individuals who have contributed to the transformation of environmental health and have created innovative ideas in the advancement of environmental health services," explained Clr Nonceba Molwele, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development.
"The objective of this award is to promote strong unity among environmental health practitioners; to promote professionalism and interaction among EHPs; and to encourage EHPs to undertake research and market their findings", emphasised Molwele.
“It has been given full recognition by several organisations, namely, the National Department of Health, the South African Institute of Environmental Health and the International Federation of Environmental Health”, says Peter Manganye, the Director for Environmental Health in the City of Johannesburg.
"All environmental health practitioners who have innovative ideas or who have done work for the advancement of environmental health within the City of Johannesburg have been notified to register for the awards. The nominees of the Alfred Nzo Award will receive certificates, and the overall winner will receive a trophy", said Manganye.
The late Nzo was a veteran of the anti-apartheid struggle and was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs after the first democratic elections in 1994.
