05/10/2015: Eco Mobility up and running

The Eco Mobility World Festival has passed its first test today, with thousands of road users swapping their cars for the public transport system and various other modes of moving around the Sandton CBD.
The first day exceeded expectations, with all operations functioning within the Sandton CBD and at the various park and rides, says MMC for Transport Cllr Christine Walters.

Over 284 cars used park and ride facilities and these exclude the observed extra numbers at Gautrain stations. Over 2000 people were using Maude Street in the morning peak alone, a street which is usually clogged with cars.

There were a few challenges including signage, which the team is addressing, however the MMC says the system is ready for more users to swap their cars for EcoMobility.

The City has arranged over 10 000 park and ride spaces, most of which cost R10 per day.

This morning the Executive Mayor took a Metro bus from his house to Sandton. He has challenged the residents of Joburg to follow his example. Residents are encouraged to take a selfie, while using alternative mode of transport and post it to #joburgecomobility.

The MMC reminded residents to attend the Mayor’s EcoMobility Imbizo on Tuesday, 06 October at the IDC Conference Centre, 19 Fredman Drive, to fruitfully engage the Mayor and share their experiences and even suggestions.
