10/03/2015: We, the people walk 2015 
 
The Constitution Hill in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg, Gauteng Provincial Legislature and Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS), will host the 2nd edition of the Human Rights Walk on the 26th April 2015.
Dubbed, ‘We, The People Walk’ , which is taken from the preamble of the South African constitution, this year’s route will once again make its way through the streets of the City of Johannesburg. The Human Rights Walk is a symbolic activity that seeks to honour those who played a role in the establishment of this site, its significance and recognise the role of those who participated in the struggle for the attainment of South Africa’s Constitutional Democracy.

This year’s edition of the walk aims to celebrate and educate about human rights, democracy and constitutionalism, the pillars for which the Constitution Hill stands for. Acting Chief Executive Officer of Constitution Hill, Themba Ntuli said “the walk aims to educate about the bill of rights, and celebrate 21 years of freedom.

MMC for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr. Chris Vondo said this year’s edition of the Human Rights Walk augurs well with the of 60 years celebrations of the Freedom Charter, of which Constitutional Democracy and Bill of Rights are entrenched. “Therefore, We, The People Walk’ is an important feature in our calendar simply because it reminds all our people of the journey we travelled to realise our freedom and democracy”.

Significantly, MMC Vondo continued: “the Human Rights Walk is an important social cohesion tool. Therefore, harnessing collaborations such as this one is important for us in the City of Johannesburg because it provides us with platform to realise our vision of promoting healthy living lifestyle and nation building among all our citizens”.

The 5-km walk will be preceded by the Thand’uMzansi campaign, which aims to promote patriotism and active citizenry by encouraging all citizens to read the preamble to the constitution, hoist the flag and sing the national anthem. This year, participants will also sing the African Union anthem. Along the route will be representatives of different sectors who will discuss and engage with the walk participants, and still art which will enable walkers to artistically express their thoughts on the subject matter.

After the walk there will be various activities for young and old alike! On stage will be performances by musicians, poets and dancers, and there will also be activities for children such as face-painting, a jumping castle, as well as educational programmes to teach them about their rights and responsibilities. This will be a fun-filled day for the entire family!
