12/06/2015: Joburg to share best practices with global cities

The City of Johannesburg on Thursday, June 11, 2015, joined various cities in signing a declaration of agreement on cooperation, continuation of dialogue and sharing of best practices at a two-day Mayors’ International Summit on Living Together held in Montreal, Canada.
Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Councillor Parks Tau represented the city in signing the declaration titled the “Montreal Declaration on Living Together” during the Summit which begun on Wednesday.

Mayor Tau said: “By signing the declaration, we all agreed to find a balance between openness and vigilance in our respective applications of innovative and sustainable urban practices that promote social and economic inclusion, safe public spaces and access to education.”

The declaration also committed the mayors to create a Mayors' International Observatory on Living Together, which cities may join on a voluntary basis. This commitment also encompassed that the Summit, which was held for the first time this year, be held every two years in any of the member cities.

Furthermore, Mayor Tau and the City of Montreal Mayor, Mr. Denis Coderre, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will see the two cities form a cooperative relationship in accordance with prevailing laws and regulations of each country in various fields. These fields include smart technologies in energy and water, migration, safety, culture, transportation, social inclusion, as well as skills, knowledge and academic exchange.

The MOU between Johannesburg and Montreal comes on the foundation of an existing partnership between South Africa and Canada, which was strengthened by the 7th Annual Consultation in May 2012.
