15/06/2015: Joburg leads the way in doing business
The City of Johannesburg has emerged as the best municipality in South Africa to start a business and register a property.
These are two of the findings contained in the "Doing Business in South Africa 2015" report launched in Midrand on June 12.
The findings were released following a survey, the first in a subnational "Doing Business" series in South Africa, that benchmarked nine cities and four maritime ports. The study covered six indicators, namely starting a business, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering a property, enforcing contracts and trading across borders.
The launch event was organised by the National Treasury and co-hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), South African Cities Network and the World Bank Group. The survey was in response to a request by the National Treasury for assistance in promoting competition and enabling a better business environment across South Africa’s largest cities.
The report covers the country’s eight metros - Buffalo City, Cape Town, Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Johannesburg, Mangaung, Nelson Mandela Bay and Tshwane - and Msunduzi Local Municipality. The "trading across borders" indicator only applied to the country’s four maritime container ports - Cape Town, Durban, Ngqura and Port Elizabeth.
The project was implemented by the Global Indicators Group of the World Bank Group in collaboration with South Africa's National Treasury, DTI and the South African Cities Network. It was co-funded by Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs and the National Treasury.
