29/04/2015: Executive Mayor Parks Tau congratulates Kaizer Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs has made Johannesburg proud by winning the Absa Premier League, says Executive Mayor Councillor Parks Tau.
Mayor Tau, on behalf of the residents of Johannesburg, would like to congratulate the team and its chairman Kaizer Motaung following the club’s 4-1 victory over Polokwane City. This has given Amakhosi an unassailable lead at the top of the Premier League.
“It warms our hearts to see a Johannesburg-based club win the league in such an emphatic style,” said Tau.
“This win entrenches the position of Joburg as the pre-eminent sporting destination in the country and helps reignite the passion for soccer that the city is famous for," he added.
Through this win, said the Mayor, the Phefeni boys have once more brought prestige and excitement to Joburg, a City of champions.
On Tuesday the City of Johannesburg threw its weight behind fresh and innovative efforts by the South African Football Association (SAFA) to nurture grassroots football with the launch of a “safe hub” in Alexandra, northern Johannesburg.
Speaking at the launch, Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development Cllr Chris Vondo said the City was grateful for the opportunity to partner with the private sector on the project.
Sport is an important social cohesion tool. Therefore, harnessing collaboration with various stakeholders in the City of Johannesburg is important because it provides the City with a platform to realise its vision of promoting healthy living lifestyle and nation building among all its citizens.
