30/09/2015: Joburg on track to realising its “Safer cities” priority 

The City of Johannesburg is encouraged by the by the efforts made by all law enforcement agencies to tackle crime in its area of jurisdiction.
According to the 2014 crime statistics released by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko yesterday, Johannesburg does not feature among the top 10 police precincts with the highest murder statistics in the country.

The City of Johannesburg has over the years rolled out a number of initiatives to tackle crime. These include amongst others;
• The rollout of CCTV cameras in the Inner City
• The launch of “Joburg Ten Plus” where the Joburg Metro Police are concentrating on crime prevention as well as compliance by-laws in each ward.
• The establishment of the Intelligent Operations Centre (IOC).

The IOC will create a state-of-the-art analytics centre to assist the City’s management to take proactive and preventative actions that improve public safety and emergency management responsiveness.

In areas where CCTV’s are already operational, we have seen a 37% decline in assaults and a 27% reduction in robbery. The positive effect on combatting crime has resulted in Johannesburg dropping off the list of the most dangerous cities.

Last week Wednesday, Council considered a report by the oversight committee on governance, which noted that the IOC has been established at Penmore Towers in Region F.

The City’s Intelligent Operations Centre enables for disaster prevention and management through the application of data analytics software of data derived from the City’s existing Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras. The establishment of improved systems, processes and ‘early warning’ capabilities across the City, will serve as mechanisms through which to anticipate, mitigate and drive greater responsiveness to service delivery, public safety, environmental and security issues.
