06/10/2016: Appointment of Gabu Tugwana as Mayor’s Spokesperson

Gabu Tugwana has been appointed spokesperson to the Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba, with immediate effect. He is a former journalist at various publications including the Rand Daily Mail; The World and Weekend World; and the community-based, nationally distributed New Nation. He also edited the New Nation with the late Zwelakhe Sisulu, and ANC stalwart, Walter Sisulu.
He has been working for the City for 13 years in the Group Communication Department. Newspapers which he served were all vocal against human rights abuses prior to the 1994 democratic elections and in the early stages of the new political dispensation, paying the price of detention without trial at different instances for a period totalling 21 months.

Cllr Mashaba welcomed Gabu to his team. He said Gabu, with his vast experience in the media sector and other community service commitments, which include serving on the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund as a trustee, will be an invaluable addition to the team.

“We wish him well in this new position,” added Cllr Mashaba.

Many thanks,
