13/10/2016: Zandspruit roads clean-up campaign
Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) with other City Departments and Municipal Owned Entities (MOE) will be running a roads clean-up drive in Zandspruit on Friday, 14 October 2016.
In line with the promise of being a responsive and caring city and bringing dignity back to our residents especially those in informal settlements, the Executive Mayor Councillor Herman Mashaba is engaging communities to ensure that the City listens to them and commits to its mandate. This engagement is being undertaken during Transport month, under the theme “safe streets and transport for all”.
Dr Sean Phillips, the Managing Director of the Johannesburg Road Agency confirmed that “a site in Zandspruit has been identified for the clean-up campaign. This will involve a complete makeover of the main access routes of Ernst Wolf, Pierre and Jubilee roads. JRA will partner with Pikitup, Joburg Water, City Parks, Social Services, Housing, CoJ Transport Department and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department”.
Executive Mayor Mashaba and MMC for Transport Nonhlanhla Makhuba will also be rolling up their sleeves to join in the cleanup initiative.
City of Johannesburg Mayoral Committee Member for Transport Councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba stated that by providing quality roads and related infrastructure, communities such as Zandspruit will benefit from improved road safety and accessibility. She confirmed that during Transport Month her focus will be on road safety, community education and awareness for the protection of road infrastructure which is often affected by vandalism, theft and abuse to the detriment of all road users.
JRA teams will render the following activities during the clean-up drive:-
Gravel road grading
Repairing and cleaning storm water inlets
Pothole repairs and patching
Erection of street signage, and
Painting of speed humps and road markings.
Joburg Water will assist with the sewage and grey water discharging on the road surface creating potholes while Pikitup will focus on illegal dumping and removal of waste. The JMPD team will engage the community on bylaw education and street trading aspects infringements which affect road infrastructure.
Other essential services to be provided by the multi-entity clean-up drive include a Social Services campaign focusing on substance abuse in the community, grass cutting and cleaning of Zandspruit Park by City Parks. Flyers and pamphlets containing information about service delivery will be distributed to households and the community at large.
Mayoral Committee Member for Transport Councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba concluded that the City is committed to improving the lives of Joburg residents and upgrading streets so that they are safe and clean for all road users.
