08/08/2017: No-confidence protests: JMPD, EMS and Disaster Management on high alert
In light of the Motion of No Confidence vote taking place in parliament today, and the subsequent nationwide protests, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Emergency Management Services (EMS) and Disaster Management are on high alert together with the South African Police Service (SAPS) across all seven regions in the City of Johannesburg.
From as early as 04:30 this morning, reports have been received that many roads in and around Joburg have been blockaded with burning tyres and rocks.
The R550 Golden Highway, Randfontein Road, Impala Road, Elias Mostoaledi Road, Main Reef Road, Beyers Naude Drive and Marina Road have all being blocked by burning tyres.
Soweto is reported to be the most affected with routes being barricaded from Medowlands on Vincent Road which links to the Soweto Highway and the N17, as well as Chris Hani Road near Rockville and Rifle Range Road near Southgate Mall leading to the M1.
Near the City center, Booysens and Heronmere Road, Twist and Wanders Road, Biccard and De Korte Streets as well as Nelson Mandela Bridge are affected.
Roads North of the Johannesburg are affected near Ivory Park, Midrand and Tembisa at the R55 and R562.
JMPD and EMS officers are working to clear the roads in an effort to restore traffic free flow. However motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes.
