08/08/2017: Women Empowerment a focus for the City of Johannesburg
As we celebrate Women’s Month, the City of Johannesburg has re-committed itself to playing a more proactive and supportive role in promoting the inclusion and development of women in the city. The City remains intent on increasing the range of activities that empower women.
The Department of Social Development in the Human and Social Development Cluster takes the strategic and practical lead in the implementation of the City’s Policy for Women Empowerment, in collaboration with all the other clusters in the City.
The Women Empowerment Policy is aimed at empowering all the women of Johannesburg, but more especially women who have, historically, been socially and economically disadvantaged. These vulnerable groups of women include:
• Illiterate and poorly-literate women;
• Impoverished women;
• Elderly women;
• Female and girl-headed households;
• Foreign migrant women;
• Women with disabilities;
• Domestic workers;
• Sex workers;
• LGBTI’s (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Intersex).
Below are the programmes we’ll be running throughout our regions this Women’s Month:
We are working to address the capacity challenges of our programmes, and are taking an active role in ensuring that the needs of women in the City remain a priority throughout our tenure, and not only on special occasions.
