20/03/2017 Fine-free’ period during Library Week​

If you have been avoiding the library because of overdue books carrying a hefty fine, relax and stress no more.
The City of Johannesburg has declared March 18- 1 April as a ‘Fine-Free’ period.

The campaign falls under the annual National Library Week which runs from 18-25 March.
During this period, patrons are urged to return overdue books without having to pay any fine.
The amnesty period will promote and increase the recovery of library books and also increase library usage. This period will also encourage borrowers to continue using the library services despite having had overdue books.

Upon returning the books, not only would fines be erased, but the privilege of borrowing books will be reinstated.
“As a City, we hope that all lost copies will be recovered during the ‘Fine- Free’ period and that available funds can be used to buy new books. This will also afford patrons the opportunity to use our libraries again without feeling any guilty or embarrassed,” said Councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba, Member of Mayoral Committee for Community Development.

The City will celebrate Library Week by promoting programmes that contribute to empowering communities, while the Library and Information Services Directorate will continue to fight poverty by improving literacy levels and providing educational support.
