MMC Sifumba disappointed with Councillors’ refusal to participate in #AReSebetseng
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg and Regional Head for Region D, Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba, is disappointed that some ward councillors from Region D refused to participate in the A Re Sebetseng city-wide clean-up campaign on Saturday, 30th September 2017.
The A Re Sebetseng clean-up campaign was launched by the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba in August 2017.
A Re Sebetseng is about communities taking pride in their areas by maintaining and cleaning them.
The campaign seeks to promote a culture of cleanliness in areas that are associated with dirt and grime, by involving both the government and the community in a campaign where we all dedicate the last Saturday of each month to cleaning the areas in which we live.
A Re Sebetseng is about re-awakening the spirit of the community taking responsibility for the cleanliness of their areas. It is not an effort by the government to abdicate its responsibility for allocating resources to keep the City clean.
A cleaner Johannesburg will be more attractive both to visitors and investors, thereby creating employment opportunities to curb the high rate of unemployment. In this respect, A Re Sebetseng is also a means of making Johannesburg a more attractive investment destination.
I am pleased that the community of Zola were not discouraged by these ward councillors’ unwillingness to attend the clean-up campaign, and came out in their numbers to ensure cleaner neighbourhoods.
Several City departments and entities, led by the Community Development Department, as well as residents, gathered at the Zola Eco Park to assist with a clean-up Campaign on the 29th of September.
This clean-up included the planting of trees, which served to beautify the park and ensure that current and future generations live in an environment they can be proud of.
I would like to thank all residents who came out on both Friday and Saturday, and looking forward to seeing more community members coming out on the last Saturday of every month to ensure a cleaner Johannesburg we can all be proud of.
