City holds press conference on R80 million stolen City Power infrastructure
Today, 01 November 2017, MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Nico de Jager, the new MD of City Power, Mr Lerato Setshedi, and the Head of the City’s Group Forensic Investigation Department, General Shadrack Sibiya, will hold a press conference on seized City Power infrastructure, stolen by unscrupulous sub-contractors, worth R 80 million.
This follows an operation lead by the City’s Group Forensic Investigation Department consisting of City Power engineers and the South Africa Police Services (SAPS) following information received regarding City Power equipment which had never been returned by current and former sub-contractors.
10 properties in various parts of Johannesburg including Midrand, Kempton Park and Germiston were searched as part of the operation.
The criminals who steal our power infrastructure sabotage our economy and our City, leaving businesses and homes in the dark, costing ratepayers a fortune and robbing resources from service delivery. It is estimated that 45% of the power outages in the City are caused by cable theft.
There will be opportunities to inspect some of the confiscated infrastructure.
Details for the press conference are as follows:
Date: 01 Nomvember 2017
Where: City Power, 40 Heronmere Road, Booysens
Time: 11:00 am
There will opportunities for interviews and photographs.
