In light of the R19 billion City Power infrastructure backlog, which includes a streetlight refurbishment and maintenance backlog amounting to R1.2 billion, I am pleased with the work being done by City Power to bring light to our communities.

Despite the entity facing a massive backlog and a total overhaul of the City’s infrastructure being required, City Power is working hard to improve service delivery. City Power is conducting numerous street light installation and maintenance projects throughout the City.

During the course of January 2018, 142 street lights were installed in Poortview and 57 in Modderfontein. By end of February, 108 street lights will be installed in Swartkoppies, and 9 in Mmesi Park.

While new street lights are being installed, City Power is also undertaking maintenance of the over 270 000 existing streetlights scattered across the City.

As part of this undertaking, street lights are also being inspected twice a week along all major routes to establish any defects. Turn-around time for fixing these lights are seven days.

All minor routes are also being inspected once every quarter and repaired within fourteen days.

Maintenance of streetlights conducted throughout the City include the following:

Replacement of covers, lamps and photo cells; and
Straightening of poles.

The City is in need of additional capital funding to be able to replace all street lights and not just a pole by pole replacement as maintenance requires. However, in an effort to be proactive, a dedicated General Manager, who is solely responsible for the maintenance and repairs of streetlights, have been appointed.

Having working streetlights aids with prevention of night-time accidents and crime; and as such, residents are urged to report defective street lights at 0860 562 874 or log a call on the City Power website by visiting our fault logging system on www.citypower.co.za

Members of the public can also report theft and vandalism of our streetlights on 011 490 7900 or 011 490 7504.
