The City of Joburg Health Department was forced to destroy vaccines following another incidence where electrical cables were stolen by thieves at Westbury clinic.

The City is concerned about the continuous theft of electrical cables at Westbury clinic that has a negative impact in service delivery.

This time around critical vaccines that must be stored in refrigerators at stipulated temperature ranges were affected.

According to the report by the Security, the electric power went off at 10:00 on Thursday, 27 December 2018. As a result, the generator which serves as a back-up power supply system could not kick in because of the interference with the cables.

Just two weeks ago, the same clinic was plunged into darkness when thieves’ attempt to tamper with the main cable failed to cut the main power supply to the clinic.

Member of the mayoral committee for Health and Social Development, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, has called on the community of Westbury to stand up and protect their health facility.
Phalatse said she was concerned about the number of criminals’ acts directed at the clinic and has appealed to residents to take a stand.

“I’m calling on the community to expose those who continue to target clinics and other government facilities across the city. We cannot allow criminals to continue to disrupt key services across the City. Our health facilities play a key role and should be protected at all times, “said Phalatse.

City power was notified and the Generator has been restored and power reconnected.
