The Department of Public Safety’s Emergency Management Services (EMS), Disaster Management and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is out in full force since the early hours of this morning manning intersections where traffic lights are down, easing traffic congestion and tending to incidences relating to the heavy rains which have caused flooding in some areas of the City.
Last night, residents whose dwellings are close to flooding river banks were evacuated to numerous temporary shelters by EMS and Disaster Management officials, who also provided emergency relief such as blankets and food.
It has been reported that a number of shacks were washed away in Diepsloot Extension 7, but no fatalities or injuries have been reported thus far.
Public Safety MMC Michael Sun says: “The Department of Public Safety’s JMPD, EMS and Disaster Management have been working during the course of last night attending to incidences and moving residents out of dangerous areas. We urge residents to take extra precaution near flooded areas such as Klipspruit, Orlando East and West, Kliptown Informal Settlement, Diepsloot Ext 7, Jackson Informal Settlement, Snake Park and along the Jukskei River. Although water in some flooded areas have started to subside, it can still be dangerous. We are also urging motorists to drive carefully and watch out for our public safety officials working on the road.”
Residents can call the JMPD 24-hours traffic hotline 080 872 3342 to report any traffic related problems and / or the JMPD Call Centre (011) 375 5911.
