Early this morning, the inner city and parts of southern Johannesburg lost power as a result of simultaneous power outages at 4 sub stations (feeding from Prospect/Mondeor/Mulbarton 88Kv feeder network), namely, Hurlingham, Mondeor, Mulberton and Fort Substations.

Power had been restored to all the affected suburbs, namely:

Hurlingham, Aeroton, Allenmanor, Meredale, Mondeor, Ridgeway, South Gate Mall and Suideroord Braamfontein, Braampark, Constitutional hill, and Parktown.
Another separate incident also caused power failure at Klipfonteinview substation.

City Power technical teams have restored power at the Klipfonteinview substation which affected communities of Klipfontein View, Chloorkop and parts of Midrand.

The City is facing major challenges with respect to ageing power infrastructure network.

Over 27% of the bulk transformers operate beyond their useful lifespan. The current electrical infrastructure backlog sits at a staggering R19 Billion. This is one of the key areas on which the multi-party government seeks to make an impact through Diphetogo. This is the fundamental change we wish to bring to the City of Johannesburg.

In the 2018/2019 financial year, City power has allocated a R1 billion capital budget. This is 25% increase from the 2017/2018 budget.

Over the next 3 years, the focus of City Power’s capital investment strategy will be to refurbish and expand the network which will involve the refurbishment, buildings of key substations, replacement of ageing transformers and switchgear, and as well as transmission lines.

These include:
Sebenza;
Rooseveldt Park;
Orlando;
Eldorado Park ;
Cleveland ;
Mulbarton ;
Nancefield;
Wilro Park; and
Lutz Substation.

Upgrades to these facilities will stabilize the City Power’s infrastructure.

This is part of our commitment to ensure that the City of Johannesburg shines brightly at night once more and brings safety and security to the neighbourhoods in desperate need.

We urge all our customers to assist the City to reduce the high electricity demand by doing the following:
Switch off electricity geysers during the day when there is no need for hot water;
Switch off all electricity appliances where they are not in use; and
Switch off lights and heaters in all rooms that are not occupied.

We would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused to our customers.
