The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba, wishes to express her condemnation of the unfortunate incident where the opening of the exhibition titled “From Horse Drawn To Electric Current: The Story Of Joburg Trams” that took place on Thursday, 24 May 2018, was disrupted.

The exhibition is an educational activity aimed at showing the heritage and evolution of public transport in the City, and members of the public are invited to visit the exhibition, which will be running until 24 August 2018.

”On behalf of the City, I wish to apologise unreservedly to the patrons of the museum and the guests that were present, both from South Africa and from across our borders, including guests from the Namibian National Museum Association” stated Sifumba.
Sifumba stated that it was truly regrettable and unfortunate that the Ward Councillor - who is the political head in that ward and was entrusted with officiating the event - was complicit in the unfortunate disruption of an official event of the City. “The current administration has often found itself dealing with such instances, where political leaders use City events aimed at residents to undermine the current government of the City. This is a pity, as their actions deprive residents of the services they so rightly deserve. Playing to party politics at the expense of delivering services to our residents is a shame, and should be treated with the condemnation that it deserves” stated Sifumba.

The City is taking all the necessary steps to ensure that action is taken against those involved in disrupting this event to ensure that this does not happen again.
“As the current government we will not be deterred from delivering services and programmes to the residents of the City by a handful of people who seek to undermine the programmes of the City in order to serve their own selfish political interests. We will use whatever is at our disposal to protect the residents of our beautiful City against these bullying tactics” stated Sifumba.
As the City we are committed to delivering pro-poor development that is aimed at advancing the interests of the people of Johannesburg, especially the previously forgotten members of our communities.
