On Sunday, 23 September 2018, the City of Joburg will host its Inaugural Indigenous Gospel Music Festival - also known as Clap and Tap Festival - at the Finetown Multipurpose Hall.
This is part of the Arts Alive programme, and is a continuation of the City’s Heritage Month celebrations.
Oral art forms have always been central to the African experience. Communal values, skills, the creation of cultural spaces and experiences have for centuries been transmitted orally - through folklore, and particularly through music.
Music as an oral and performance art has always been deeply ingrained in most social activities; to raise and censure conduct across all ages for the greater good of the collective, as well as fostering a high degree of social cohesion and stability among most indigenous families and communities. Music and dance continue to be the most potent means of expressing the values and fundamental structures of the socio-cultural and economic life of our society.
‘Clap and Tap’ is a cultural expression of worship, as well as the celebration of our heritage and cultural uniqueness, and the City is proud to be hosting an event that will see attendees from different backgrounds and cultures all united through music.
The festival will feature choirs such as the St. Clement Gospel Choir; Stars of God Gospel Choir; Atlehang Gospel Choir; Inkanyezi Gospel Choir; Lebo and Inkanyezi Gospel Choir; Christian Pentecostal Gospel Choir; Lehodimo le butswe Gospel Choir; Ikhambi Gospel Choir; Relemohile Gospel Choir; The New Image Gospel Choir; Dinaledi tsa Tshepo and Mighty Oh Lord, who will be the headliners.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba said, “We would like to encourage all music lovers to attend the festival and support our local choirs. The festival is free to all members of the public. We encourage supporters to arrive early for the festival.”
