Parts of the Cosmo City Multipurpose Centre in Region B will be closed off to the public until 30 June 2018 to allow the City of Joburg to carry out much needed repairs to the structure. The centre was built in 2010 at a cost of approximately R20 million, and has since become the prime centre of community activities in the area.
Public access to the second floor of the building will be restricted as repairs commence, but the city will continue offering all services on the ground floor of the building.
The condition of the centre, which was built in 2010, had deteriorated in recent months and it was beginning to pose a risk to the employees and members of the public.
“I apologise to the residents of the City, especially those that rely on this centre for their recreational activities. As a City we are committed to serving the residents with pride, and we put their health and safety on top, which is why we had to close the centre to allow for the repairs”, stated the Member of Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Joburg, Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba.
“Much of the damage in the centre was caused by the leaking roof, and the centre also had an unhygienic sewer backflow problem, which was part of the poor workmanship that the City is saddled with as part of the legacy from the previous administration” stated MMC Sifumba.
The repairs will entail fixing the roof, elevators, the gallery reception desk, the gym ventilation, the vinyl floor and replacing of the carpets in the affected areas. Other work deemed necessary will be effected, such as the installation of gutters on the grand stand roof to address the downpour during heavy rains.
“I acknowledge that this centre is one of our busiest in the City as it offers services ranging from arts, culture, recreation, sport and literacy classes, which is why its closure is not something the City takes lightly. We will ensure that the repairs are done speedily so that the residents are not denied the opportunity to enjoy this facility any longer than they should” stated Sifumba.
