A formal bail application was made in the Alexandra Regional Court by Albert Pretorius who stands accused of killing two JMPD officers while driving under the influence.
On the evening of Monday, 29 January 2018, Pretorius smashed his double-cab bakkie into a JMPD visible policing operation on Witkoppen Road, resulting in two officers being killed and several motorists being seriously injured on the scene.
Pretorius has been detained in prison since the incident and is awaiting his bail application.
During the bail application hearing, the accused’s attorney argued that the prima facie evidence of his client’s intoxication - which was nearly six time over the legal limit - was not conclusive that his client was driving under the influence at the time of the incident.
Pursuant to the argument by the parties, Magistrate Boshoff required further evidence and remanded the application to the morning of 9 February 2018.
The grieving families of the late officers were emotional as they come to face-to-face with the accused.
I am bereaved that the accused, through his attorneys, showed no remorse for the heinous crime he has committed. By trying to deny his guilt and level of intoxication at the time of the incident, he is wasting the court’s time and deepening the pains of the Ngoasheng and Mokgolo families.
We respect and will continue with the judicial process, and trust that justice will be done. As the department, we will continue to provide support to the families of our fallen officers.
Pretorius remains in custody and the case resumes tomorrow 9 February 2018.
