On Monday, 19th November 2018, Councillor Leah Knott, MMC Economic Development, successfully conducted an oversight visit together with Ward 71 and 85 Councillors, the Regional Director and Region C officials.
The purpose of the tour was to note and address concerns raised by Councillors around long outstanding service delivery issues within the area.
Some of the issues raised included the reconstruction of a collapsed bridge, potholes, skoffeling, infringement of bylaws in conservation areas, pedestrian safety and illegal electricity connections in Groblerpark ext 14 and 26.
The reconstruction of South Road Bridge will commence in January 2019. A TLB was sent out within the same week and skoffeling done on Pannevis and Patriot Roads restoring the dual carriage way and a pedestrian crossing with signage was installed on Albertina Sisulu Drive, to ensure the safety of Princess residents crossing this busy intersection. Storm water issues in Bert Close have also been addressed and rectified with broken slabs being removed and KI’s repaired.
“I am particularly impressed by the JRA’s quick response in addressing issues raised on this oversight visit. The swift action taken here reflects the commitment that city officials have towards residents and service delivery with pride. I would like to make specific mention of Erick Tshikudu from JRA. He has really gone the extra mile. ” MMC Knott.
Other issues of vagrancy and crime were raised by residents who live near to the Bert Close Nature Trail. Residents have offered to pay for gates at two points along the trail so that access control can be enforced after hours. This gesture will help to speed up the city’s response and the Joburg Property Company will be able to install the gates as soon as the money is raised.
These oversight visits remain an important element to the City’s strategy of providing services to the people of Johannesburg and assisting Councillors on the ground with addressing the serious backlog in service delivery left behind by the previous administration.
This week’s site visit has helped jump start some of the short-term solutions needed whilst working towards long-term solutions.
