Eight suspects who were arrested last Friday in connection with a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) jobs scam will appear in the Sophiatown Magistrate’s Court today.

It is alleged that the suspects paid close to R50 000 in exchange for jobs to a certain individual and his accomplice who was also arrested on Friday.

The suspects reported for duty at the JMPD offices in Martindale and produced fraudulent JMPD officers’ appointment certificates and fraudulent medical certificates.

The City of Johannesburg’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) was called to interview the suspects, they then confirmed that the certificates were obtained illegally and they were arrested on the spot. It is unclear at this stage how long this sort of scam has not been going on for.

Corruption has no place in this administration. The prevalence of employment scams is even more concerning as residents of this city who are seeking work have become easy prey for criminals.

I would like to remind residents of my promise to do all that I can to ensure that our officials work in collaboration with law enforcement institutions such as the Hawks and South African Police Service (Saps) to ensure that criminal elements in our communities are squeezed until there’s no place left for them to work as parasites.

I therefore encourage community members to report any fraud and corruption activities through our 24hour tipoff hotline 0800 002 587 or visit the GFIS offices situated at 48 Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein.
