The Department of Public Safety's Emergency Management Services (EMS) firefighters and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) responded to a fire call at what is believed to be a printing factory in Kya Sands at about 05:30 am this morning.
EMS fire trucks and firefighters from the Roosevelt, Randburg and Hunters Hill fire stations rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze fuelled possibly by chemicals and flammables inside the printing factory. Heavy black smoke could be seen from kilometres away.
Firefighters are still on the scene trying to contain the fire and to ensure that the fire does not extend to the nearby buildings.
MMC for Public Safety says “Our firefighters are doing all they can to contain the fire in the Kya Sands industrial area, the blaze is fuelled by unknown substances in the printing factory and we are concerned of the extent of the blaze and the possible toxicity of the black smoke”.
Investigation on the cause of the fire is currently underway, wherein the amount of damage will also be assessed. Fortunately there have not been any reports of injury of fatality as a result of the fire.
