I am pleased to announce that I will be travelling to Kigali, Rwanda, this weekend to represent the City of Johannesburg in, perhaps, one of the most important gatherings of critical thinkers and leaders in the public services sector in Africa; the 2018 Ibrahim Governance Weekend.

Organised by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation - headed by philanthropist, Mr Mohammed "Mo" Ibrahim - the gathering will seek to find solutions on how to build an effective and efficient public service fit for the 21st century Africa.

As home to the economic hub of Africa, it is fitting that the City of Johannesburg be represented at such an event.

The City’s participation at this weekend’s gathering is especially important given that our multiparty government’s efforts to build a professional civil service, in Johannesburg, as a pre-requisite for achieving quality service delivery.

One of the first things we did after assuming office was to focus our efforts on conducting an independent skills audit within the City, so as to ensure that every manager in the City is in their position because of what they know and how they can deliver results that bring positive change to the lives of our residents.

I look forward to sharing my experiences, in this regard, with my colleagues on the continent so that we may build a public service that is geared towards the needs of the people of Africa, rather than the whims of politicians.
