I strongly condemn the incident which occurred yesterday evening, where an off-duty JMPD officer – driving an official vehicle – crashed into the rear end of another vehicle which collided with a mini bus taxi and resulted in the unnecessary killing of three people, including a child.

The accident occurred near the Golden Highway and Elephant Street in Vlakfontein Extension 1.

This incident comes just a day after Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba led a prayer service in Meadowlands, Soweto, calling for the safety and protection of our JMPD officers. During his address, he also urged JMPD officers to adhere to the rule of law and work with communities to root out crime in Johannesburg.

“We will not tolerate our JMPD officers to be on the wrong side of the law or allow any unethical conduct. I want to echo JMPD Chief of Police, Mr. David Tembe’s message - that when one officer does wrong, that officer taints the reputation of the entire JMPD,” says MMC Sun.

The JMPD officer in question was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol and was taken for a breathalyser test at the JMPD Wemmer Pan Complex.

The officer was placed under arrest and is being detained to face criminal prosecution.

The Department of Public Safety undertakes to co-operate with the police investigation and will ensure that justice takes its course.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families who have lost their loved ones in such a tragic manner.
