15 properties, which were not paying for municipal services, were targeted yesterday during the first day of Operation Buya Mthetho. The areas which were targeted included Roodepoort, the inner city and Parkview.
Level 3 disconnections were effected to 9 properties during the operation. I have instructed JMPD to monitor these properties and ensure that services are not illegally reconnected at these sites.
I have every faith that the JMPD, working with our law enforcement partners, will do all it can to ensure lawbreakers are held to account.
Operation Buya Mthetho is a new multi-departmental operation aimed at enforcing by-laws and bringing the rule of law to the City of Johannesburg.
2 hijacked buildings in the inner city were also identified during the operation. The details of these buildings have been handed over to the City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) for further investigation.
This operation will be conducted on a daily basis, as a ward based “raid” initiative.
Operation Buya Mthetho is a joint operation between all key City departments and entities such as JMPD, Environmental Health, Social Development, Infrastructure Services, the City’s legal department, and Development Planning to name but a few.
The operation’s main focus is to ensure city by-law are adhered to by all within the City and that the rule of law becomes the order of the day.
The City, working with all state enforcement agencies, will not leave any stone unturned when dealing with criminal activities within our area of jurisdiction.
I hope that the residents of Johannesburg will support our initiative and report crime and criminals to our authorities.
