The South African Weather Service has issued a “WATCH” for the potential formation of a severe thunderstorm over the far northern and north-eastern parts of Johannesburg (Gauteng) for Thursday the 20th of December 2018.
ALERT LEVELS/TERMS
Weather ADVISORY – Focuses on an alert for more than FIVE days (potential)
Weather WATCH – Focuses on the next day up to THREE days (preparedness)
Weather WARNING – Focusses on the anticipation (high certainty)
Based on the alert, the City of Johannesburg Disaster Management Centre (CoJDMC) is calling on the residents of the City and its visitors to be observant for weather conditions that potentially could lead to disruptive and disastrous situations, such as:
*Heavy rainfall that could lead to;
*Flash flooding of low-lying areas and bridges or
*Severe thunder with hail, wind gusts or tornado-like formations.
The CoJDMC would like to ask its residents and visitors to the City to exercise caution, especially between midday and midnight of the 20th of December 2018.
PRECAUTIONS
- As far possible remain indoors;
- Do not seek shelter under trees;
- Look out for signs of potential tree toppling;
- Avoid open and isolated spaces;
- If trapped in a flooded vehicle abandon the vehicle and call for HELP;
- Listen for and adhere to official ALERTS given over the radio, television or social media by trusted sources – to avoid panic.
