Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development, Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba invites community members and members of the media to attend the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo celebration of Wetlands
Day.
Current sustainability studies and conversations point out the importance of maintaining a balanced eco system. At the center of this balanced eco system is the preservation of wetlands.
Celebrated every year on 2 February, World Wetlands Day raises the global awareness about the importance of wetlands for people and the planet. The theme for this year has been declared as “Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future”. The theme seeks to highlight the important role of wetlands for sustainable urbanization.
Whether we call them marshes, swamps, vleis, bogs, seeps, fens or pans, wetlands are unique ecosystems which are usually home to many animal and plant species. Sadly, 50% of the world’s wetlands are being destroyed without the appreciation of the role they play in sustainable living in the cities especially.
Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, as the green lungs and fingers of the City has joined in this celebration of the many wetlands that the City of Joburg is endowed with.
Activities for the day will include among others:
• Wetland experiment;
• Wetland model and facts exhibition;
• Soil erosion experiment; and
• Bird exhibition.
Details of the events are as follows:
Venue: Elmon Molele Precinct, Soweto.
Date: 28th February 2018.
Time: 09h00 – 13h00.
