People who are in arrears on their City accounts must pay up or make arrangements with the City to pay up, or face having their services terminated.
RESIDENTS who fail to pay their City bills on time risk finding themselves in the dark. The City has embarked on a campaign to clamp down on defaulters following a rise in the number of customers not paying their outstanding accounts.

Residents can pay their bills at any customer service centreResidents can pay their bills at any customer service centreAccording to Kgamanyane Maphologela, the spokesperson for the City’s revenue and customer relations management department, notices will be sent out to customers who have defaulted. “All services will be terminated on accounts with outstanding balances. Further legal action will commence immediately to recover outstanding amounts owed to the City.”

He encourages customers who are having difficulty in paying their outstanding accounts to make use of the arrangement options offered by the City. For one, there is the expanded social package Siyasizana, which provides social service subsidies to residents who earn less than R3 366 a month.

Customers who do not qualify for Siyasizana can visit their nearest customer service centre and make arrangements to repay their debt. However, customers will still have to pay any arrears on their accounts as they will be subject to credit control and debt collection actions.

“Customers who have logged a legitimate query and received reference numbers will be excluded from the campaign,” Maphologela says.

Customers who have recently converted to pre-paid meters but who were issued with pre-termination notices should visit their nearest customer service centre to update their meter details.

Those who have queries or concerns can contact Joburg Connect on 011 375 5555 or send an email to joburgconnect@joburg.org.za. They can also go to a customer service centre to make queries.

You can find the various customer service centre and paypoint addresses online.
