Three master classes are on offer for trained dances during this year’s Dance Umbrella, all taught by top choreographers and dancers. Booking is essential.
DANCERS are invited to participate in three master classes being taught by leading choreographers during Dance Umbrella.
The Master Classes are for trained dancers onlyThe Master Classes are for trained dancers onlyThey will take place on 25 February, and on 3 and 4 March at The Dance Space in Newtown; each master class will take two hours. Lliane Loots, together with the Flatfoot Dance Company, will facilitate the first class, starting at 10am on 25 February.
She will work on release techniques during her workshop and says people will leave her class with a sense of having fully worked the body.
On 3 March, Malcolm Black from the Remix Dance Company will host a workshop that unites disabled dancers with contemporary dance. The class again starts at 10am.
The final workshop will be taught by Jamila Rodriguez, a master’s student at the University of Cape Town. She will combine of a mixture of release techniques; capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian dance that combines elements of martial arts, sports, music and dance; and break dance styles. Her class, on 4 March, also starts at 10am.
The classes are free, but are only open to trained dancers – they are not beginner classes. The Dance Space is at 1 President Street, Newtown.

Dance Umbrella runs from 24 February to 6 March at a variety of spaces, including the Wits Theatre, Dance Factory, Goethe on Main and University of Johannesburg Arts Centre.
