Joburg school wins can contest
A sculpture of a rhino made from cans collected for recycling has won a Joburg school first prize in a countrywide competition.
THE Collect-a-Can Craze Competition has been won by a Joburg school, Hoërskool Florida. The contest encourages children to take care of their environment.

In the competition, schools had to build a structure out of 300 or more cans in the most creative way possible. “Schools continue to impress us with their creative and ingenious artworks,” said Zimasa Velaphi, the public relations and marketing manager of Collect-a-Can.

“We’d like to congratulate all the schools that participated and encourage them to take part again next year.”
South Africa’s diverse cultural and natural history was showcased in the winning entries of this year’s competition, which ended at the end of September.

Hoërskool Florida focussed on the pertinent subject of the future of one of the big five in a giant rhino sculpture.

Reflecting the natural flora of the area and demonstrating environmental awareness, Greenwood Independent School in Western Cape Province cam second with a sculpture of a quiver tree.

For the first time, an individual learner was awarded a prize. In third place, Joshua Behrens from The Hills College in Eastern Cape used flattened cans to make the face of Nelson Mandela.

The cans used to build these structures were recovered by Collect-a-Can and processed for recycling, demonstrating to schools and learners the environmental benefits of collecting cans.

Beverage cans are the most recycled form of beverage packaging in South Africa, making them the most eco-friendly choice when buying drinks.
