NetballCultivating a culture of sportThe games, named after the anti-apartheid activist Oliver Reginald Tambo, are held annually since 2006 and will be staged in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality at the Germiston Stadium on 21 October.

Activities will include golf, soccer, volleyball, netball, basketball, table tennis, cycling, road running, walking, tug-of-war and dart. Mind games such as chess and morabaraba will also be on the menu.

Hosted by the South African Local Government Association (Salga), the OR Tambo Inter- Municipal Games are aimed at fostering relationships between the 15 municipalities in Gauteng and cultivating a culture of sport.

Municipalities are urged to submit registration forms on or before the 3 October between 8am and 4pm at the Germiston stadium. Fixtures will be drawn up on 11 October at the same venue at 10am.

On the day of the Games, teams are encouraged to arrive at 6am, with the first round of the games starting at 7am. At stake are gold medal for the winning teams, while the runners-ups will receive silver medals.

Spectators will be granted free entrance.

“So far, the preparations are finished, we will be waiting to meet with team co-coordinators to finalise a total number teams that will be participating,” he said.

The Games have been rotating across Gauteng municipalities since their inception; they were first hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni in 2006, followed by the City of Johannesburg in 2007, City of Tshwane in 2008, the Sedibeng District Municipality in 2009 and the West Rand District in 2010.
