Celebrities will join City staff and other stakeholders in Let’s Race Across Joburg. They must use public transport to get across the city in the quickest possible time.
CITY councillors, local celebrities and transport stakeholders will race across the city in an attempt to promote the use of public transport.

It is part of Transport Month, the national campaign held each October. The theme this year is “Connecting people and places”.

On the day, participants’ knowledge of public transport in Joburg will be put to the test. They will be required to race in taxis, buses and trains; the trick though, will be to choose the transport mode that will get you to the destination the quickest.

Five teams will start the race at 7am from various places, namely Orange Farm, Ennerdale, Thembelihle, Poortjie and Lakeside. They must arrive at Theatre on the Track in Kyalami at or before 12 noon.

The member of the mayoral committee for transport, Rehana Moosajee, will be in one of the five teams.

Celebrities expected to participate on the day include the former Bafana Bafana midfielder, Doctor Khumalo; the poet, Lebo Mashile; and the actress, Hlubi Mboya. They will join representatives from non- profit organisations and private companies.

“At the end of the race, the different teams will explain to a gathering of public transport operators their experiences,” explained Moosajee.

“We hope the lessons learnt from their experiences will be taken to heart by the operators. We believe it is very crucial for the government to highlight the need to continuously improve public transport.”

The event will also mark the relaunch of open-top Metrobuses, which will be used for private hire.

Let’s Race Across Joburg is one in a series of events that will be take place throughout in October aimed at promoting the use of public transport.
