Residents who are registered for the City’s social services package, Siyasizana, will also be helped to find employment through Joburg’s various job creation programmes.
QUALIFYING citizens earning less than R3 861 a month can register for the City’s Expanded Social Package, Siyasizana.

On the package, they will get priority access to employment programmes through Job Pathways initiatives and Expanded Public Works Programme placements. This will assist in terms of skills training and employment.

Siyasizana is a basket of benefits the City allocates to residents based on their level of poverty. It is a City programme set up to help indigent households by providing free basic services and poverty alleviation assistance.

It is a national pilot for the Social Development Department’s National Integrated Social Information System, which combines data from the Unemployment Insurance Fund, the South African Social Security Administration, and the departments of Housing and Home Affairs.

To qualify for the employment programmes, residents must visit specified service centres where their needs will be assessed by social workers. There are centres in each City region:

People wishing to apply for the employment programme should take with them to register, a copy of their identity document; their City of Johannesburg rates and taxes account; their City Power account, Eskom account or pre-paid meter card or meter number; their Johannesburg Water account or pre-paid water meter token; their updated CV; and certified copies of their qualifications and identity document.

In return, if they qualify for Siyasizana, they will receive subsidies for City services such as water, electricity and rates, sanitation and refuse removal.
