They cry and laugh with their children, feel their pain and are always on the sidelines to provide much-needed encouragement. And in return, each year a day is set aside for families to show their mothers just how special they are.

This year Mothers’ Day will be celebrated on 8 May and Sandton City is helping people document special moments with their mothers by providing free pictures to be taken until 7 May. Pictures are being taken at the upper level Fountain Court.

On the day itself, instead of preparing the usual breakfast or heading to a restaurant, try the Johannesburg Zoo, which will be holding its massively popular annual 702 Mothers’ Day Concert.

It runs from 9am to 3pm, and families are encouraged to bring along their blankets and picnic baskets, preferably not prepared by the mothers themselves.

Concert
This fun filled day will be jam-packed with melodies, with visitors serenaded in “an unforgettable performance fit for a queen”, says Candice Segal, the zoo’s acting brand and communications manager.

On the programme are the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, the Bala Brothers and Tamara Dey. Entrance is R50 entrance per person older than 13; R30 for pensioners and young children, and free for children under three.

Sandton CityGet free pictures taken in Sandton CityThere will be more music at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort, where the band She will perform from 1pm to 3pm. The band promises a string of hits from the 1960s through to the ’90s. Entrance is R50 for adults, R40 for students, R30 for pensioners and R15 for children.

Adventure
An adventurous day is on offer at Gold Reef City Theme Park, where there is a special entrance price for mothers of R100 (the usual price is R150) on 8 May. There is also a lunch special costing R250 for adults and R200 for children. It includes entrance to the theme park, a chef’s choice buffet at Barneys Restaurant and a special gift for mothers.

Across town at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, there will be a brunch in the hotel’s gardens with live bands and a free-flow of Villiera MCC Brut or Rose. Prices are R350 per adult and R140 for children between the ages of six and 18.
