Aladdin sets the Genie of the lamp free, and in return, his dreams come true. This summer, take the kids to follow his magical journey on stage.
ARABIAN magic, secrets and mysteries are unravelled in the famous tale of Aladdin, which is being staged at the National Children’s Theatre this summer.

Helped by his friend, the powerful Genie of the lamp, his life is transformed from rags to riches. Aladdin has big ambitions, and with the Genie’s influence, he wins the heart and hand of Princess Jasmine.

According to Theron, exquisite costumes and delightful characters will transport the audience on a thrilling journey to the Orient.

“This heart-warming stage adaptation carries all the classic Disney themes – friendship, family, hope and love. These themes are the foundation of our human condition and engage the imagination and instil personal character that will last a lifetime.

“The play is a remake of the cartoon version and kids will love and enjoy it. It includes popular songs that kids and adults will enjoy and it is colourful, funny and warm,” explains Theron.

Expect interactive edutainment that it will excite young audiences. The cast includes Natasha van der Merwe, who appeared in the production of Mamma Mia; and Devon Flemmer, who was part of the acclaimed African Adventures.

Matthew Counihan is in the lead. He has made a name for himself in musicals such as the Rocky Horror Show. Opposite him, Princess Jasmine is played by Kopano Zimba. Other cast members include Clint Lesch; Melanie Mazibuko; Rhys William, who was in Dreamgirls; Ferdinand Botha as the sultan; Kenneth Meyer as Razoul; and Lynn Thompson, who was in Evita.

Aladdin is on at the National Children’s Theatre from 14 November to 23 December. Tickets are available at Computicket, at R80 for children and R90 for adults. Block booking and specials are available for schools, groups and birthday parties through the theatre on 011 484 1584/5.

Show times are 10.30am and 2.30pm from Mondays to Saturdays. The National Children’s Theatre is at 3 Junction Avenue in Parktown.
