Would-be actors in Alexandra will soon be able to hone their skills at the Twilight Theatre Organisation’s programme of Saturday acting classes, which starts on 7 May.
ASPIRING actors in Alexandra can start dusting off their performance techniques and opening their notebooks, because the Twilight Theatre Organisation is offering Saturday acting classes from 7 May to 30 July.
Acting classesAspirant actors can attend classes offered by Twilight Theatre“The programme was initiated to look at the development of performing in two aspects, as acting for theatre and acting for camera,” said the organisation’s founder Thabo Makgaretsa. It is aimed at all members of the community aged 16 and above.
Makgaretsa and Mogul Pictures, who are sponsoring the project, identified a niche in the market. “We realised that a lot of people quit acting for other jobs and careers, while others have interest and have joined casting agencies but don’t have any success in the industry because they still lack professional skills,” said Makgaretsa.
The organisers’ previous experiences in theatre and film casting have taught them that the development of skills in the industry is a necessity. The acting classes are meant to address this skills shortfall.
“[We] have anticipated gathering an actors’ database through this training, which would ultimately help artists to join casting agencies and give them internal opportunities to land roles in our future film and theatre productions and programmes such as Theatre Night,” said Makgaretsa.
It will do so by providing professional coaching, which would provide participants with standards appropriate for mainstream productions. “Our actors will certainly benefit from the basic and advanced content that would be facilitated by filmmaker Boikarabelo ‘Mike’ Motaung, a distinguished writer/director graduate of AFDA.”
The Thusong Youth Centre will The Thusong Youth Centre in Alex Classes will take place on Saturdays specifically because that is when the target group is available. “Most of the people are at work or school during the week, and we want to present an opportunity to everyone interested in acting as a profession or otherwise,” Makgaretsa said.
It will be light on the pocket for anyone wanting to participate, at R400 per month. Registration for the programme, which can accommodate about 25 people, is currently under way and costs R100.
The training will take place at the Thusong Youth Centre at 138 - 11th Avenue in Alexandra, where Twilight is based. If taking the class now is not a feasible option, Twilight Theatre will host another term of classes later in the year, from 6 August to 29 October.
