Uys’s For Fact’s Sake at Market

For one night only, Pieter-Dirk Uys will be at the Market Theatre with For Fact’s Sake. The performance is a fundraiser for Drama For Life.
HIV, Aids and sex will be tackled by Pieter-Dirk Uys in his one-man-show, For Fact’s Sake, at this year’s Drama For Life (DFL) fundraising event at the Market Theatre.

“With Uys’s artful ability to infuse serious social and political issues with comedy, the evening is bound to have a hilariously enlightening outcome,” says Lonwabo Mavuso, the DFL project manager.

He explains that Uys will share facts and fictions about this great fear in the lives of all of us, dying of love. “Much of the information made up the core of his internationally acclaimed award-wining performance Foreign AIDS.”

The performance will help raise fund for DFL’s scholarship programme. Over four years, the organisation has supported over 80 postgraduates from 15 African countries. DFL was established in 2006, with the goal of using applied drama and theatre practices in the fight against HIV/Aids in Africa.

Additional funding will be used to support the organisation’s work with its various partnerships, which it does at Hillbrow Theatre, Soweto Kliptown Youth, Rainbow Sparrow Village and education sites in and around Johannesburg.

Guest speakers at the fundraiser will be Dali Tambo, the chairman of the DFL advisory board, and Justice Edwin Cameron, a DFL supporter. They will speak about the organisation’s work and the general issues posed by HIV and Aids in South Africa today.

According to the 2010 global report by UNAids, the United Nations programme on HIV/Aids, South Africa has the largest number of people living with HIV. The estimated number of people infected with HIV/Aids is 5,6 million. “This corresponds to 17,8 percent HIV prevalence,” reads the report.

The fundraiser is supported by the Market Theatre, Goethe Institut, Business and Art South Africa and Wits University. After Uys’s play, there will be a cocktail party.
