On Monday 14 April 2014, councillor Parks Tau the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg will deliver his State of the City Address (SOCA) at 11am from the Orlando Communal Hall in Orlando East Soweto.

This will be his third Address to Council and citizens and will be attended by 1000 stakeholders from across the City. Of importance is the fact that the SOCA is being held in Soweto for the first time ever. This is in line with the Corridors of Freedom Concept that was announced by Mayor Tau in his previous speech.

The SOCA will be preceded by the taking of a salute and wreath laying at the Metro Civic Centre in Braamfontein, in commemoration of JMPD and EMS personnel who have died in the line of duty. Invited guests will thereafter be transported to Orlando via Rea Vaya busses and have a chance to witness developmental achievements along the route made by the City over the past 20 years.

At Orlando, the Speaker of Council, councillor Constance Bapela will officially open Council, welcome guests whereafter the mayor will be asked to deliver his speech.

Councillor Bapela says, “The SOCA address is one of the most important events of the year. Mayor Tau will surely give an indication of the City’s continued commitment to the well being of residents and highlight some new projects and initiatives planned”.

Continuing she says, “We are also busy with public consultation meetings on the draft 2014/15 Integrated Development plan and some of those comments will be in the Mayor’s speech as Joburg seeks to redefine the City skyline and greatly improve the quality of life for residents”.

Mayor Tau is likely to stress the importance of good governance around improving oversight within the City towards achieving a clean audit report.

The SOCA will be broadcast live on following community radio stations: Alex 89.1fm, Eastwave 92.2fm, Eldos 87.6fm, Lenz 93.6fm, Jozi 105.8fm, Mix 102.3fm, Radio Today 1485am, Thetha 100.6fm, Rainbow 90.7fm, UJ 95.4fm and Wits 90.5fm.
