New Council Chambers almost complete


In a couple of months, City of Johannesburg councillors will be the proud owners of a R280-million brand new council chambers.

Scheduled for completion in March 2017, about 40 small, medium and micro enterprises were subcontracted and the projects also created employment for locals, resulting in 20% of the budget going towards creating employment.

The City, through Johannesburg Property Company, invited artists from various regions of the City to submit their artwork to be displayed at the new Council Chambers building in Braamfontein. The state-of-the-art Council Chambers that will accommodate 361 council members and has a full view of the Theatre Park and Joburg Theatre.

The art competition saw 500 entries from different artists both young and old, professionals and amateurs participating. Among these 500, 135 of the best were shortlisted and will have their artwork displayed at the new Council Chambers once it is completed.

The art will be translated to wooden totems and tell different stories from the various communities of the City of Joburg. To represent all seven regions, 10 to 25 designs were selected from each region to ensure inclusivity is in place at the new chambers.​
