The City of Joburg in partnership with the Australian – South Africa Alumni Association (ASAAA) will be hosting 80 girl learners from Letsibogo Secondary School in Meadowlands, Soweto. This year’s event will be held at the Civic Theatre on Thursday, 25 May 2017, from 08h30 to 15h00. Attendance is by invitation only due to limited space.

This is part of the 15th edition of the Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Initiative, a platform for organisations to empower and motivate young girls in South Africa.

Women, particularly black women, have been historically marginalised in the workplace and such initiatives are a proactive way of addressing barriers to their entry into gainful employment. In addition to this, many women in previously marginalised communities such as Soweto continue to bear the financial brunt of providing for their families. It is important then, that we empower them and ensure a fair path to success for them.

The programme aims to expose girls to the working environment, provide career information and advice to enable them to make informed academic and career decisions. It is also an opportunity for employers, and in this regard the City, to showcase career opportunities in the municipality, as well as to stimulate youth interest in local government.
