Last week, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) K9 Unit’s Inspector Peter September and “Giyana” (narcotics specialist dog) scooped awards at the South African Working Trial Dog’s Association National Championship Competitions.

Inspector September entered the competition with Giyana for eight categories at the competitions against 15 other dogs and their handlers from across the country.
The championship was a test for the working trial dogs and their handlers across categories such as discipline, accuracy, fitness and detection skills of the K9 and human partnership.
Giyana and Inspector Peters were amongst the most impressive competitors winning the following accolades:

MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Michael Sun congratulated them saying: “these accolades are well deserved because I know Inspector September had been instrumental in the training of the JMPD K9 dogs and ensuring that the City has a professional and effective K9 Unit.”
MMC Sun said the reason the K9 Unit was established was to combat criminals and drug dealers across the streets of the city. “We are delighted to hear that our JMPD team has been proven to be one of the best in the country. We deeply appreciate our JMPD K9 Unit as they have been instrumental in efforts to fight crime,” he added.
