On Wednesday, 14 suspects were arrested for operating a bogus recruitment agency in Johannesburg’s CBD.
The suspects were arrested in a sting operation led by Group Forensic and Investigation Service in collaboration with members of the Hawks and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD). Unsuspecting job seekers sent their CVs to the company, they were instructed to pay a R650 fee to secure placement as firefighters for the City’s Emergency Management Services. The bogus job advertisement offered R15 000 per month for the opportunity. The suspects were operating from 155 Ilpa House, Commissioner Street in the Johannesburg CBD.
While the laying of the trap brought good returns for law enforcement officials, investigations are ongoing and more suspects are expected to be arrested.
“This is a milestone in prioritizing the need to bring back the rule of law to our communities. Operation Buya Mthetho remains committed to ensuring that criminals are left with no safe havens that are to the detriment of our people. I will continue to encourage our law enforcement officials to leave no stone unturned in their work against criminality and continue to send a strong message that while criminals may run, they cannot hide,” said Joburg mayor, Herman Mashaba.
