The Johannesburg Arts Alive Festival presented the Youth Creativity and Cultural Expression Festival at Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto, on 16 September 2018.
This festival afforded youth cultural groups and musicians the space to showcase their wares, unleash and expose their talents in activities like dance, poetry, music and visual expressions.
The line-up included Kgb, Push, Little Rose, Arise & Shine, Kyp, Khayalethu, Pimvile Records, Nomsa Manaka studio and Barefoot productions. Special guest artist was Sho Majozi, who is a philanthropist and inspiring musical artist with a solid entertainment band that performs brilliantly.
The event was free and it was pleasing to see many young people in the crowd enjoying themselves in a safe environment.
Director of Arts and Culture in the City of Johannesburg Vuyiswe Mshudulu said: “There are very few platforms that cater for young artists. Events such as Arts Alive are important because they encourage young artists to focus and not lose sight of their talents.”
Many artists find themselves in a situation where they have not been given a platform to express themselves and end up in other sectors. The City is helping to create a critical mass of active performers in the arts and culture sector.
