The upgrade of Brixton Park by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) on behalf of the City of Johannesburg will ensure that the communities and neighbouring areas around Brixton enjoy outdoor and social life to the fullest.

The Brixton social cluster is located within the Empire Perth transport corridor, which is anchored by the Phase 1B BRT route linking Soweto to Parktown. Large-scale densification is envisioned along this route that will create an increased demand for public and social infrastructure.

The R130 million Brixton Social Cluster forms part of the City of Johannesburg’s strategy to meet this demand by upgrading the existing Brixton Park with additional sports and recreational facilities. Council approved the urban design framework for the project in June 2016 and the JDA was tasked with the implementation of the project.

The upgrade of the Brixton Social Cluster comprises several phases. Phase 1 consists of constructing new multi-purpose sports and recreation centre, new and upgraded sports fields and combi-courts parking.

Phase 2 consists of the creation of a public square, new library, new coffee shop, the upgraded green open space and kids play area upgraded swimming pool

The project has employed seven local labourers and two SMMEs to date. Completion expected to be between June and August 2019

The CEO of the JDA, Christo Botes, said it was co-producing solutions and meeting local socio/economic needs and mitigating challenges for the communities in Brixton and surrounding suburbs in partnership with stakeholders.
