A suspect was arrested and an investigation is underway.

The tragic incident happened near Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, leaving her 10-year-old child with injuries.

Responding to the incident, MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun expressed his condolences to the family and loved ones affected and condemned what he called a “senseless killing”, going further to say that “the unabated loss of lives without justice for the families and loved ones of victims cannot and will not be tolerated.”

He said it was unacceptable for residents to live in fear due to unscrupulous gangs reigning terror in their own neighbourhoods.

“I have asked SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lt. General Deliwe De Lange and JMPD Chief of Police David Tembe to urgently increase visible policing and crime prevention joint operations in the Westbury area and set up a special task team to investigate these gang related crimes as a matter of urgency.”

He reminded residents of the City’s commitment to providing safe spaces to live, work and play without fear of any harm.

MMC Sun also appealed to community members to come forward with any information that will bring the perpetrators of such crimes to face the full might of the law.
